Biography & Historical Legacy

Dr. Yeduguri Sandinti Rajasekhara Reddy (8 July 1949 – 2 September 2009), universally and affectionately known as YSR, was a colossal political figure whose tenure as the 14th Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh fundamentally transformed the landscape of public welfare in the state. Born in the rural heartland of Pulivendula in the Rayalaseema region, YSR’s early career was rooted in medicine rather than politics. After completing his MBBS degree, he established a 70-bed charitable hospital in his hometown, working directly as a medical officer serving the impoverished. This intimate exposure to the daily struggles and healthcare crises of rural farmers forged the deep empathy that would later define his political philosophy.

The Historic Padayatra

Entering politics in 1978, YSR quickly ascended the ranks of the Indian National Congress, serving multiple terms as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) and a Member of Parliament (MP). However, his defining political moment occurred in the sweltering summer of 2003. With the state reeling from a severe, prolonged drought and an agrarian crisis, YSR embarked on an unprecedented 1,475-kilometer padayatra (foot march) across Andhra Pradesh. Enduring extreme heat and physical exhaustion, he walked through hundreds of remote villages, directly listening to the grievances of farmers, weavers, and marginalized communities. This historic march catalyzed a massive wave of grassroots support, sweeping his party to a landslide victory in the 2004 elections.

A Legacy of Radical Welfare

As Chief Minister, YSR’s administration was unequivocally pro-poor, launching a series of revolutionary welfare schemes that became models for the entire nation. His flagship program, Aarogyasri, was a groundbreaking healthcare initiative that provided free, high-end surgical and medical care to millions of Below Poverty Line (BPL) families, ensuring that catastrophic illness would not lead to financial ruin. He also launched the Jalayagnam project, a massive irrigation initiative to permanently solve the region’s agricultural water crises, and the Indiramma Housing scheme to provide affordable homes to the rural poor.

Tragically, just months after securing a resounding re-election in 2009, YSR perished in a helicopter crash over the Nallamala forest. His sudden death triggered massive outpourings of public grief, cementing his legacy as a true "People’s Leader." In 2010, the Government of India issued a commemorative postage stamp in his honor, recognizing his monumental contributions to rural development.
